Computational Infrastructure for Geodynamics (CIG) Procedures and Policy on Proposal Submission to CIG

  1. Members of the scientific community are encouraged to provide their input into the priorities of CIG by submitting proposals to CIG. Proposals are expected to span the range of activities from community building workshops to proposals for specific software tasks and projects.

  2. Proposals should provide succinct summaries of the scientific goals, a clear statement of how each of these goals furthers the earth science and computational objectives of CIG, and detailed tasks needed to accomplish these goals. Proposals should also identify the CIG resources needed to achieve these goals along with clearly delineated time-lines for their completion.

  3. The CIG Science Steering Committee (SSC) will evaluate these proposals on an ongoing basis to determine the scientific suitability, and to rank their relative importance. The Executive Committee (EC) will then consider those proposals recommended by the SSC at least twice per year and determine whether they can be supported given the available resources (money and developer time).

  4. All proposals submitted will be posted on the community web site, http://www.geodynamics.org, in their entirety. A mechanism will exist for members of the community to make public comments on posted proposals.

  5. To find the appropriate balance among supported projects and to maximize the impact of CIG efforts on the community, the SSC and EC will work with proponents of acceptable proposals for ultimate inclusion in the CIG Strategic Plan.

  6. All proposals should take a balanced view between earth science and computational science objectives.

  7. Support may be sought in the form of CIG staff effort or direct funding. If direct support is sought for a project, then an appropriate budget must be provided.
