Install and Use CIG Software

CIG provides source code and/or binaries of various open-source geodynamics codes to assist you in your research. You do not need a CIG member account to access this software.

  1. Choosing a Software Package
    • Click the Software tab above and then select Software Packages.
    • Click the subdiscipline desired (e.g., Mantle Convection, Short-Term Crustal Dynamics) and then click a package (e.g., CitcomS, PyLith).

    Or, at right, click one of the core CIG software packages, or click "Browse all software"

  2. Downloading Software
    • If binaries are available, we recommend you download and install the binaries provided for your computer platform. Instructions are found in the software's User Manual.
    • If you are experienced building from source, or if source code is the only choice, follow the detailed instructions provided in the associated User Manual.
    • All CIG source code is also available via the Subversion server. This allows users to view the revision history of the code and check out the most recent development version of the software. Additional development tools including a Subversion client are required; follow the instructions in the pertinent User Manual.
  3. Running the Software
    • Each software package includes a User Manual that will guide you in running the code.
    • Included in the User Manual are tutorials or cookbook examples which lead you step-by-step through typical problems that can be solved by the software.
  4. Getting Help or Making Suggestions - To identify known issues, report bugs, request help, or provide feedback or suggestions:
    • Browse and/or submit new issues at our RoundUp Bug Tracker.
    • Browse the appropriate mailing list; see CIG Mailing List Archives.
    • E-mail the appropriate mailing list with details of your problem or suggestion
      • Select a list at CIG Mailing Lists.
      • On each list page, links are provided for you to send a message to the list and/or subscribe to receive future messages.
core software
CitcomS - finite element parallel code for modeling compressible thermochemical convection in a 3D domain (e.g., within the Earth's mantle)
Gale - 2D/3D parallel code for long-term tectonics problems in orogenesis, rifting, and subduction
Mag - serial version of a rotating spherical convection/ magnetoconvection/ dynamo code
PyLith - finite element code for the solution of dynamic and quasi-static tectonic deformation problems
